[04 / LAB]

Calorimetry first.

Heat is the primary observable, measured by two calorimeters on every cell. Neutrons, charged particles and helium are cross-checks, and every threshold is fixed before the run.

[04.1 · FOUR DESIGN RULES]

Four design rules. Every run accountable from day one.

  1. 01

    Calorimetry first.

Every cell sits inside a thermal envelope whose heat balance is logged continuously. Neutrons, charged particles and helium are cross-checks; heat is the primary observable.

  2. 02

    Radiologically quiet by construction.

Detector positions, moderator blocks and shielding are fixed features of the room, never per-run improvisation.

  3. 03

    Hydrogen discipline everywhere.

Deuterium and hydrogen never mix with air outside a flare line. Every hydrogen space is monitored and interlocked.

  4. 04

    Isolated signal wiring.

Fiber-optic triggers, a single-point ground and blind acquisition windows during pulsed discharge keep drive power and detector signals on separate paths.

Lab build: design rules

[04.2 · THE VILLA]

Gas, power and radiation each own a room.

Six rooms and an outdoor cylinder store. They were chosen so that gas, high voltage and radiation each have a dedicated space with a dedicated wall to the outside. One hydrogen stub line crosses into the Cell Room, signals leave on coax, triggers arrive on glass fiber.

[ROOM-TO-ROOM RULES]

  1. No hydrogen-bearing line enters the Control Room or Cell Room. Gas delivery to cells is through a single Swagelok stub line with excess-flow check valve, entering at the Gas Room/Cell Room wall.
  2. Detector signals travel Cell Room to Control Room on RG-223 coax through a bulkhead plate; all triggers traveling the other way are fiber optic.
  3. The Cell Room floor carries painted standoff rings at 1.0 m and 2.0 m radius from the primary cell position. Fixed detector mounts anchor at the 1.0 m ring: the moderated helium-3 counter north, the two liquid-scintillator tubes east and west at 1.0 m separation (time-of-flight baseline), the NaI(Tl) gamma detector south behind a shadow bar.
  4. The Drive Room and Cell Room share a single star ground point on the Cell Room wall: one 6 mm2 copper strap from each room's equipment racks to one grounded bus bar. Nothing else grounds to building steel through a second path.

[04.3 · THE FOUR-CELL TEST MATRIX]

Four cells. One of them is the control.

Two cell families match the two carriers of the device. All share ports, sensors and mounts, so calorimetry and diagnostics never need re-rigging between variants. No cell runs without a certified pressure boundary and a relief path into the flare line. §2.4 containment

[04.4 · TWO CALORIMETERS ON EVERY CELL]

Two ways to weigh heat. Both, all the time.

One calorimeter is built for sensitivity, the other for absolute power. Both run continuously, and both are calibrated with a known electrical power, so the lab never relies on a single thermal number.

[THE WEEKLY RULE]

No same-week calibration, no reportable run.

Joule-only calibration runs happen weekly and after any cell rebuild.

[FIG 02A]Isoperibolic · Seebeck envelope
Nested cans: the cell inside a thick aluminum can wrapped by a 400-pair thermopile, inside a reference can, inside an isothermal enclosure held at 25.00 C, inside a lagged box. Heat leaving the cell crosses the thermopile and becomes a voltage. LAGGED BOX ENCLOSURE · PID 25.00 C REFERENCE CAN THERMOPILE · 400 PAIRS CELL Joule resistor
Heat balance, logged at 1 HzPthermal = U · Vtp + Cth · dTin/dt
Sensitivity
Highest of the two. The thermopile reads microvolts on a nanovolt-class channel, electrically floating from the cell so excitation current cannot leak into the heat signal.
Calibration
A precision resistor dissipates a known power at six setpoints from 0.1 to 20 W; U and Cth are fitted by least squares.
[FIG 02B]Flow · Coriolis mass flow
A water jacket around the cell, fed by a circulator through a Coriolis mass-flow meter; matched Pt100 probes read the inlet and outlet temperature; a condenser returns vapor from the headspace. CELL CIRCULATORJulabo F25-ME CORIOLISBronkhorst M15 20–60 g/min T in T out condenser 0.2–3 K rise
Heat balance, logged at 1 HzPflow = ṁ · cp · (Tout − Tin) + Ceff · dTmean/dt
Strength
Absolute steady-state power. The Coriolis meter weighs the flow directly, independent of water properties; the Pt100 pair is matched to 0.03 K.
No hidden losses
A condenser returns vapor to the cell, so no latent heat leaves through the vent; that correction is bounded below 10 mW.

[HOW SMALL A SIGNAL] Power, watts, log scale

The 50 mW floor is a design target after 1000 s of averaging, to be demonstrated in commissioning. The flow span is arithmetic on the documented circuit: 20 to 60 g/min of water at 0.2 to 3 K rise. Excess heat is always reported as Pthermal − Pinput, with input power measured at the cell feedthrough, not read off a supply display.

[§3.3] Every channel the calorimetry logs, every second, per cell
  • Thermopile voltage
  • Enclosure setpoint and current
  • Inlet and outlet temperature
  • Coriolis flow
  • Cell bulk and wall temperature

[04.5 · DIAGNOSTICS]

A ring of detectors that must agree.

Fixed mounts on painted 1.0 m and 2.0 m rings around the primary cell. Neutron time of flight and CR-39 plastic in the cell are always live as a cross-checked pair; every other channel adds specificity.

[HOW THE DIAGNOSTICS COUNT]

  1. 4independent readouts: heat, neutron coincidences, CR-39 track density and helium-4. Each has its own five-sigma threshold, fixed before the run.
  2. 2detector classes must agree before a signal enters a report: neutron time of flight (electronic) and CR-39 in the cell (passive plastic).
  3. 7instruments in the ring feed those readouts. Tap any of them in the drawing below.
  4. 2calorimeters on every cell measure the heat: sensitivity from one, absolute power from the other.

[04.6 · GAS HANDLING AND SAFETY]

Hydrogen is a flammable gas first, an isotope second.

  • The flare rises above the roof with a flame arrestor; its solenoid opens only when ventilation is proven.
  • The Cell Room is registered as a radiation area before first excitation; badges are exchanged quarterly.

[04.7 · THE 90-DAY COMMISSIONING ORDER]

Prove the instrument before the experiment.

The first 90 days of occupancy test the lab, not the device. Deuterium enters only after hydrogen has been through every channel cleanly.

  1. 01

    Gas-room leak-back and purity

Prove the gas system holds and the deuterium is clean, before any cell sees gas.

  2. 02

Calorimeter Joule calibration and noise floor

Calibrate both calorimeters with known electrical power and demonstrate the noise floor.

  3. 03

Two-week detector background campaigns at run geometry

Two weeks with every detector in place and excitation off, to fix the room's baseline.

  4. 04

    Pickup census

Fire every excitation into a dummy load while detectors count. Pickup above twice the quiet-room baseline means a wiring investigation.

  5. 05

    First hydrogen-analog suspension runs end-to-end

Hydrogen cells through every channel, end to end, exactly like an experiment.

  6. GATE

    First deuterium

Only after a clean hydrogen-analog cycle does the first deuterated dry-bed run enter the calendar.
